Cannibals Creeped Me Out of Bed

*Spoiler alert for Carmac McCarthy's The Road*

I started reading Carmac McCarthy's The Road a few days ago.  In the beginning, I was not a fan.  His writing style puzzled me.  I had to re-read sentences to figure out what he was trying to say.  Whenever I encountered long stretches of dialogue I had to re-read to see who was talking - the nameless boy or the nameless man.

Some things that I find wrong with his book others may like.  And that's okay.  I have problems with writers who do not value clarity.  McCarthy seemed to be one of those writers.  When I began reading, I thought that maybe it was just one of those books chosen for publication not because the writer did the right things, but because the plot was so fantastic.

I'm more than halfway finished with it now, and I'm beginning to understand why everything is so unclear, why there are no chapters, why there is little punctuation.  And I have to admit that I'm glad I didn't stop reading.  McCarthy breaks a ton of rules - a pet peeve of mine - but he does it in such a way that it makes sense.  I'm glad I didn't let my initial closed-mindedness get the best of me.

I read for hours last night.  My church had had a big fellowship meal and I was hyper from an amazing piece of cake topped with apples and french vanilla whipped cream.  In the beginning, that's what kept me awake.  Then the man and the boy encountered the first cannibal.  Eee!  I kept reading.  They found a house.  The man went into the cellar, saw the blood-stained mattress, the people waiting for a savior.  People destined to be a meal.

After that I was basically up all night.  I fidgeted in my bed.  Every noise had me convinced that cannibals were coming up my driveway, their footprints fading in the ash behind them.  Eventually, I went to the living room and curled up in a big chair with blankets and a flashlight.  I read until the man found the cellar.  I read until they encountered the old blind man.  Eventually I fell asleep.  I know it was early this morning - probably five or so.  I woke up maybe an hour ago.  And what did I do?  Grabbed The Road and read until my stomach started growling for breakfast.

I've said this before, but I'm so glad that I kept an open mind and continued reading!
