Ah!
I keep running into the same old thing when I tell people I'm "reading" audiobooks. People continue to make faces or tell me why they don't like audiobooks. And, I understand that. If I had a block of time each afternoon to either read or listen to a book, I would definitely choose to read it.
However, I do think that audiobooks are important. In my crazy, busy life I don't have much time for reading. I spend about eight hours a week on the road traveling to and from school. At first, I spent that time listening to the radio, praying, and being alone with my thoughts. That got old fast (well, maybe not the praying!).
I had considered audiobooks before, but I had never actually purchased one. They are expensive and I never know if I'm going to like the person who is reading. I'm such a picky reader anyway it was hard for me to add another variable into the mix. So, I kept riding in silence.
Then, D and I went to a yard sale and I saw a stack of audiobooks for a dollar each. I carefully looked through them, made sure the disks were there, and bought four of them. I figured four dollars wasn't too much to spend on four audiobooks. You can't even get decent hardbacks for that price at a yard sale these days!
The first one I listened to was The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. At first, it was a little strange being read to. But, the reader's voice was nice and the story was interesting. So, I listened. And, as I listened, I became drawn deep into the novel. By the third day, I was excited to drive to school! I couldn't wait to see what was happening. I found myself wanting to bring the CDs inside, to listen to them on my laptop. But, I didn't. I reserved audiobook time for my long drives.
I finished The Memory Keeper's Daughter in two weeks and began reading one of the others that I had bought. It took thirty minutes for me to decide that it was not a good fit. A waste of a dollar. I pushed it aside and started listening to Night Road by Kristin Hannah - a marvelous novel with a great speaker. I finished it just this morning.
So, although I do love to read I find it hard to say no to audiobooks altogether. When I'm on the road for eight hours a week, how can anyone blame me for wanting to listen to a great story?
